Saving my favorite cheddar garlic biscuits recipe

So I had saved the link to the blog post that used to be at http://www.saltnturmeric.com/2008/11/cheesy-garlic-biscuits.html but apparently they didn't pay to renew their domain name of something like that. So at least for now, I can't access it. I found a listing of the ingredients somewhere else though, so I'm saving it here so I can make these biscuits for the rest of forever. Because they are awesome. I also changed it to be a bit more like what I actually do

Ingredients:
1 pack buttermilk biscuit mix
~1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup milk
2 tbsp butter
3/4 tsp garlic salt with parsley

Mix biscuit mix, cheese, and milk together. I like to mix in a bit more of the garlic salt as well, but I like very garlicy things.
Spray your cookie sheet and put little balls of dough on it.
Melt the butter in the microwave and mix in the garlic salt. Spoon a little bit over each of the biscuits.
Bake like it says on the biscuit packet. Like halfway through open it up and spoon some more butter/garlic on top.
When they are turning a bit brown take them out. Eat them.

Getting an Internship as an Underclassman

As the Microsoft Intern Ambassador and the CS Club Socials Chair, I've heard from multiple freshman and sophomores nervous about applying for an internship. Which is understandable. Venturing out into the 'real world' of software companies can be a bit intimidating. It seems like everyone around you has worked on multiple personal projects and knows more languages than you knew existed.

If this applies to you, TAKE HEART! I am here to tell you that you CAN get an internship as a freshman or sophomore and you WILL be successful during your time there over the summer. I've done it, and so can you.

Here are some common things you might be worried about:

1) Employers just don't want underclassmen.
False.

Two of the biggest computer science employers, Microsoft and Google, have programs specifically FOR underclassmen. Other companies will also be interested in you.

Why?

Because being an intern isn't /really/ about getting stuff done. It's not /really/ about you helping the company make a profit. While you will be getting a real project, it's not going to be a huge make or break moment for the company. What it's really about is recruiting. These companies want intelligent, driven employees, and one way to attract those people is giving them a great experience over the course of an internship. If a company can convince you that they are a great place to work at, then you are more likely to come back and be a great full time employee. So getting you early is hardly a bad thing for them.

2) I don't have enough experience to do well in interviews
This is something you can prepare for. Take advantage of this opportunity!
You DO know enough to do well, but preparing can help you feel confident and avoid silly mistakes. A lot of the interview is seeing how you think and approach problems. It's not just about what algorithms you know and what tricks you've picked up. So if you aren't on the right track, they will help you and it isn't a complete deal breaker like you might imagine.
You can also see real interview questions online. Keep in mind while looking at these that the questions are tailored to your level of experience. Sites like http://www.careercup.com/ can help you see what kinds of things you should expect to see. Taking the mystery out of it will help you feel more confident moving forward.

3) I don't know enough to do well during the actual internship
Not even remotely true!
You are not alone as an intern. You will have some variety of mentor or coach that will show you your project and the internal tools you'll be using. They are also there to help you if you get stuck and be a resource to help you learn.

When you are an intern, you are given a specific project. This isn't random: your team has chosen something that they think is reasonable for your level of experience and knowledge. As an underclassman this is likely to be easier than the project they'd give to a rising senior intern. So don't listen to people describing their internships and think 'Oh well if I don't understand that then...'

There's also so much you can learn about different languages and programming tasks just by searching around online. A lot of what you may be struggling with has been discussed online, and people will have posted their ideas and solutions. Your team will actually be impressed if you use these resources. You will never have to struggle alone.

The Cheddar Bay Incident

It was a cold and gloomy day.  Just kidding it's Houston it's hot as hell.

So it was a regularly hot day today where the sun tried to melt us into little puddles, no more so than usual. I decided that I needed to hit up Kroger to get a bit more food. So to make it more interesting, I decided to pick out a recipe to try.

Two things you should know:
1. I'm not the biggest fan of seafood
2. Red Lobster's Cheddar Bay biscuits are one of the greatest foods known to mankind.

So given those two facts, you can probably guess that I'm not super enthused about actually /going/ to Red Lobster, but I WANT THOSE BISCUITS.

So my Mom saved this recipe on Pinterest and I took a look at it. Seemed pretty easy so I thought I'd give it a go. The blog claims to be about "Easy and Simplified Asian/Malaysian Cooking for Amateurs" so I've got no clue what Red Lobster has to do with anything but hey.

I found Kroger brand buttermilk biscuit mix that was on clearance or something for ~60cents, so good deal! The world was telling me to make these biscuits.

A few changes were made in following the recipe:
- Less cheese. More like a cup
- Added a bit more milk cause I couldn't get all the flour into the sticky dough ball at first
- Garlic salt with parsley instead of oregano

But HELLO AWESOMENESS:

UHM I'm making these again. If not just for myself then for all the people on facebook that think they look om nom as well.

What will my OC life drive me to cook next?

A Couple of Songs

Here's a couple of songs I've been enjoying recently. Some of them are pretty popular on the radio and what not, some aren't. I don't even know what kind of music I'm drawn to. Maybe you can figure it out for me...

Royals - Lorde

Counting Stars - OneRepublic

Acapella - Karmin

Wicked Game - Phillip Phillips

Falling - The Civil Wars

And finally,
the epic music from Monty Python and the Holy Grail!!

quite possibly the best night ever

I'm lucky to be living in a time where the market has decided to pile money on top of tech companies. And to impress interns and make us happy, hard working future employees, these companies dish out the perks. I wish every profession in the world got what we got because man its sick. (I think all teachers should have a room full of free snacks to make up for having to deal with all of us when we were tiny little brats.)

Microsoft? Microsoft has the intern signature event.

I don't know that I can even describe in words how cool this event was, so lemme just post some pictures and you'll understand.

Let's just put this picture into context by mentioning that all during this day I was so jealous because Macklemore did a mini set when he was filming a music video in Seattle and I didn't know and wasn't there. And then HERE HE WAS ON STAGE. FOR INTENRS.

VICTORY WAS MINE.

Deadmau5 was also awesome. Many interns can't dance. It's up to you whether or not I am in this category.

And then I got a free surface pro. But I'm a CompSci in the end, so there's gonna be a whole blog post. Cause I got a new tech toy~~

'MERICA

Aka what Stripe did on the 4th o July.

So my office (that I share) at work has four walls like most rooms do. One is painted a different color but the walls by my desk are all WHITE. So BORING. So I've been doing a little bit of decorating aka prevent me from tearing down the walls because plain white is driving me mad. So in the 4th of july spirit I taped up this Pusheen comic:

You like dat instagram filter? yeah you do

And then I went to sleep n woke up yadda yadda etc etc THEN CAKE BAM

I saw a picture of this cool strawberry blueberry flag on kraft.com for some weird jello cake but I just did it on regular chocolate cake because yum. But then I saw like at least 5 different people on facebook post pictures of them having made the same cake design. With more even strawberry stripes o__o Oh well it was an awesome cake I nommed out with interns

So apparently /the/ place to see fireworks in Seattle is gasworks park, but it's hella crowded and you have to get there super early in the day to be able to get a spot at all so I was like eeehhhhhhh no. So some interns planned a bbq in bellevue instead and me and my cake zipped on down there cause yeah it was basically the interns and a few random families at this park and I didn't have to get up early to go woo.

So then we went up to watch fireworks and YAY AMERICA

And then we got stuck in the parking garage trying to leave for like 35 minutes because there was a very long line of cars. The people I was with were amusing but seriously that took way too long...

Alright peace out. I see the Red Sox on tuesday WHATUP

the past week

A bunch of stuff got squished into a short period of time so I am gonna tell y'all alllllll bout it. Because my life is clearly /fascinating/. JK but it's my blog so deal wit it

Tuesday: Minigolf. I'm not very good at minigolf. And I was still mono-tired. But it was fun and I got free pizza so win-win

Wednesday: Women's intern event. Aka more free food and they got people to paint our nails. I repainted mine today and I feel so inadequate compared to them ... I'm a nail-painting n00b. Look how pretty this is

Friday: Alright interns, you are required to leave work and go bowling.
Us: ...ok!
I didn't break 100 :( I don't go bowling very often so I don't get any better like ever. O well. They had these cool lights though so my bowling shoes were all glowy n trippy.

And then I drove all the way down to Golden Gardens park for a "bonfire". Quotes because whoever was supposed to show up early to get bonfire permissions failed. So there was no fire. And not much to do. But it was pretty. And then it got cold so I peaced out

Saturday: Zoo with our intern program~

And then today I tested my real world skills by making food that involved cooking meat. Had a consultation with my Dad about how to drain ground beef grease but overall I was successful minus some stuff sticking to this godawful pan. But it's a box meal how hard can it really be...

And now you know what I just did? YOU KNOW WHAT I JUST DID?
I BOUGHT TICKETS TO SEE THE BOOK OF MORMON TOUR WOOOOO

on being sick far from home

So this past week basically sucked. And not because of my job or the people I am around, rather because of myself.

STUPID BODY DON'T GET SICK.

So the short plan to having a miserable week Stripe-style is as follows:

1) Get mono. Probably at the airport, slimy place...
2) Incubate that bugger for a little while. It's like an alien growing inside you and you just don't know
3) Start to get sick. Alright stomach bug I can deal with that
4) STREP THROAT WHAT
5) Oh wait, it's resistant. Aka the drugs don't make it better! COOL. MORE DOCTORS.
6) Go to hospital overnight. .__.

The thing about being sick on the other side of the country from your family is that taking care of yourself because a monumental task. You also spend a lot of time on the phone which is very difficult when your throat is swollen almsot completely shut for a day or two...

Also lemme tell you a thing. Clindamycin is fantastic at what it does, but it it the nastiest tasting pill. That bright blue coating is deceiving I tell you.

So I took time off work without pay and I'm behind on basically everything but I am out of pathetic lump mode so small victories. Yep.

Alright Stripe out. Don't do what I did this week.

mini pigs

This is a food my Dad makes all the time at home for basically forever. Our preferred version has evolved over the years into this recipe, which is by far one of the easiest things to make I know of.

I mean, you only need two ingredients!!!! No measuring involved!! Screw tablespoons I do wat I want and what I want is lil smokiessss

So in my house we used to make big ones with hotdogs. And there was the cheese era where we'd cut a slit into the hotdog and put a cheese piece in there so it was all melty when you ate it. But the cheese era has passed and we have entered the lil smokies era. And I LOVE THIS ERA

Lil smokies in mini pigs are great for a variety of reasons:

A) They all been cooked already
B) They tiny. You don't have to cut them to fit in the blanket
C) THEY DELICIOUS

I like the part where you squish the crescent roll dough together so you can cut strips out. It amuses me... But you always do it as you go. So when you've rolled up enough piggies you can take a triangle and just make a regular roll. Cause also nom.

This has been a post about what I ate for dinner. FASCINATING

roundabouts are demon spawn

Now lemme tell you a thing.

Tiny roundabouts are demon spawn.

DEMON.
SPAWN.

As you may know I've been commuting 30 minutes to Sammamish for the past two weeks until my team moves. It's a nice place, can see mountains and nature and stuffz while I'm driving and I'm going the opposite direction of most traffic both ways. But like 5 minutes away from the building is THIS THING

OK WHAT EVEN.

Normal roundabouts/traffic circles/driving circle spinny things/whatEVER are ok, but this one is TINY. What benefit does this even have over just a plain old stoplight?

The thing about this terror is that theres like, NO WAY to know what people are doing. Rule #1 for being a cautious driver is assume people are STUPID. It's a fairly safe assumption. But seriously are you going? Are you turning? WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

How do you even signal in this thing?? There's probably some rules somewhere but it's definitely not intuitive and therefor its likely a BAD IDEA. I want to exit. Is that a right turn? But I'm facing straight at it? But that make me go left from where I am? WHAT IS IT????

Oh so there's a little thing that says 'yield to traffic in the circle'. YEAH RIGHT. People don't freaking yield. I imagine they just go YOLO and hit the gas because half the time they start trying to go when I'm trying to exit. Which DOESN'T WORK PEOPLE.

So you know what ends up happening half the time? I just wait forever for people to GTFO while the person behind me is like dying because they're living in Fast and Furious 213 where they drive with reckless abandon and/or I just suck. OR I end up going around the ENTRE CIRCLE. Which is so ANNOYING.

I can't wait to go back to main campus. I can WALK to work. There's no roundabouts when you walk.

LONG LIVE THE STOPLIGHT.

pikes place and emp

Yesterday I went with my roommate and a friend from school out to downtown Seattle to visit some places. Luckily it wasn't raining most of our stay! There was that weirdo drizzle at times. Seriously Seattle what kind of thing is this drizzle stuff? Is it raining? Is it not? WHAT.

First we went to Pike's Place Market. It smelled like fish, though I didn't see them throwing an around. Maybe next time :) Maybs.

I got some apple chips! I've enjoyed cinnamon ones in the past, so I knew I had to try these

It was very crowded in the morning when we went, and I could tell a lot of people were tourists because they stood around taking pictures (kinda like us lulz). I wonder what the best time to go is...?

Next we went to the EMP museum. It's a museum about music and pop culture. I wasn't terribly interested in the music aspects, but they had both Fantasy and Science Fiction exhibits going on at the time, and once I looked into what they contained I knew I HAD TO GO. HAD. TO. GO.

I don't watch Game of Thrones, but my friends were so excited to see this lol
It's not a giant museum, but since we got discounted tickets through Microsoft Prime it was well worth what we paid. Awww yesss discountssss

The chair above was near the entrance to the Fantasy exhibit, which had costumes and probs from a number of well known fantasy films and shows. I was most excited to see pages with handwritten annotations by Tokein, but I couldn't take any pictures of those. Though I hadn't seen all of the things represented, I knew of a lot.

Costumes from The Princess Bride!!!!
The fantasy exhibit was upstairs, while the SciFi one was downstairs. This is what I came to see: the captains chair from Star Trek the original series!!! Gotta love that 60s sci fiiiiiiii

Now with more tribbles!!!
They also had stuff from other star trek series, the matrix, and other series. Including Stargate! I am a big fan of the original movie, though I haven't yet gotten to the television series. I don't care what you think, the original film is great. HATERS TO DA LEFT

Going on in the same time was the Northwest Folklife Festival. I didn't take any pictures here, but we wandered around for a little bit after the museum. There were quite a few people playing instruments of various kinds on the sidewalks. It was like *doo doo doo dooooooo* combined with *vvvveeeeeeee* combined with *taptaptaptaptap* all at the same time. ._.

The worst part of the day was when we realized the address on the parking stub did not actually correspond to the entrance to the parking garage. It took a while to find our car again... All I wanted to do was faceplant. But I drove home and ate a fudgesicle instead. Close enough

things begin

I have now finished up my first week here in Redmond for my internship at Microsoft, and if possible I'm even MORE excited for the rest of the summer now.

The first day went as most first days go. Intern orientation all morning and 'mixer' type events afterwards. While some of the presentation dragged on and on, it was really exciting to be given hints about what events would come later in the summer. Days of puzzles and baseball games and intern-only festivities.

They gave us crayons at an intern mixer ... I couldn't resist

One somewhat unwelcome surprise was that the team I am on, along with two fellow interns in the same program, is currently on a bit of a camping trip. And by that I mean they are temporarily housed in a Microsoft building 30 minutes away in Sammamish while other teams shuffle about. The drive is a bit annoying after being delighted at living so close to main campus, but it's only for a short while and the area is gorgeous.

They had a cookout for the Outlook team one day this week, so we walked down towards the lake to eat and hang out. It was really lovely despite the cold and drizzle. Really glad we got to see this area: I doubt I would have driven down here otherwise!

The office is pretty fun though. Everyone is very friendly and eager to talk to the new interns about our ideas and out projects.

Free drinks all round!

We've already gotten started working on our summer project. It's really cool, and I love how much input it allowed for us to have with our own ideas and perspectives. If all goes well our work will be available to Microsoft customers! How cool :)

setting up shop

Yesterday I arrived at the place I'll be spending my summer: my apartment in Redmond. Check it out:

I like that our living room has a giant window

This is bigger than my bed at home!

My roommate came in today, so yesterday I had the place to myself. First order of business? FOOD.

The worst part about moving in to a new apartment (or dorm or house or anywhere really) is the empty fridge and pantry. :( Luckily I had an apple to eat so I wasn't going to Safeway completely starving.

I bought so. much. stuff.

Actually that's not really true. I don't have nearly as much food as I might prefer, and the selection is a bit limited. But 60 things including laundry stuff, dishwasher stuff, shampoo, mouthwash, soap, and food comes out to almost $200. o___o Those $3 and $5 items sure add up quickly don't they? Good thing I chose cheap varieties over name brand where I could, or else this would be even more painful.

A hard receipt to swallow...
The bright side is that since I'm starting from scratch it's easier for me to make sure I am eating relatively healthy. Last summer I had no car, so meals for the weekends were whatever frozen or prepackaged meals I could fit in my backpack after a 2 mile walk to the closest grocery store. Thank goodness Google had some good eats for lunch and dinner, or I might have eaten an ungodly number of hotpockets...

Tomorrow I start at Microsoft! Not entirely sure what the day holds for us, but it's exciting to finally meet my manager and other interns.

the stages of packing

Yesterday I took a flight back from school to my home, where I'll be staying for about two weeks before setting off for an internship adventure in Seattle. Of course, this meant that I spent that past few days packing. I'm not very good at packing. This is why.

Stage 1: Ok I REALLY should be packing now. But it's finals. And I'm not done yet. It will all be ok though! I'll just finish up these finals and then get to work.

*later*

Ok I finished my finals! Good work team. Let's break for a cup of tea

This mug warmer was such a great purchase.

*later*

Yeah finals wore me out. I deserve a break. I'll just sleep and hang out for a while, and then packing begins in the morning!

Stage 2: Packing is going great! Everything is going together in logical groupings and I'm sorting through all my things. I got extra boxes this year, so I don't need to worry about not having enough space. :) Since I've got so much time, I can afford to spend some time with my boyfriend before we leave. Way to be responsible and schedule extra time for packing!

Stage 3: Ok, the logical groupings stop here. Where do these things even go?? I guess it's time for my packing motto to make its glorious return: random things go in random places.

These things from my desk OBVIOUSLY belong in this candy jar.

Stage 4: Oh crap. Maybe these extra boxes weren't extra enough. I'm starting to run out of space here... Ok just crap things into any free space. If it's in a box it's good.

*later*

Ok there's no free space. These things can just come home with me! I've got space in my suitcase it'll all be alright.

Stage 5: *dragging boxes to where I'm storing them* OH GOD WHY IS THIS SO HEAVY.

Stage 6: Ok, looking good. All the boxes are moved out. Let's start packing the suitcases to go home!

*later*

Wait why are these towels still here? Those should have been put in boxes. .__. Guess they're coming home too....

*later*

OH GOD NOT ENOUGH SPACE HERE EITHER.

Stage 7: *weighs suitcase: 49.7 pounds*
Ok, Totoro plush, you fit nowhere. I'm carrying you. *hobbles to airport*
*calls parents* Yeah, when you pick me up I'm gonna need some help...

This has been a story of my life. I know it was so entertaining you're gonna read it 20 times. Totes.

i'm blogging what is this?

You probssssss don't know me as Stripe if you are reading this blog. But that's what I'm going by right now on the interwebs. Why? Because I decided. I'm not a nickname magnet so I just make my own.

I should be packing up my dorm room right now but then my pizza came so I sat down, watched an episode of Merlin, and just haven't gotten up again. My breadsticks didn't come with marinara sauce. Sadface :(

I'd say I'm starting this blog today but that'd be a lie cause I actually made this blog a few days ago. And then I went back to studying for finals. Which are over awww yesssss

I'm not internet-famous so i'll tell you things about this kiddo. But since I'm not internet famous it's likely just facebook friends reading so you already know..? I'm surprised you're still here...

I'm STRIPE. I'm not a stripe actually. I'm a human. Welp.

I go by other things too but stripe sounds cool and I like one syllable names and I like stripes.

I study COMPSCI in university. Because COMPSCI is AWESOME. And SO are CAPS. Sorry I'm done with that now. Anyways that's where the bytes bit comes in. Cause I figured the blog title should have another word and I tried all sorts of pseudo-deep hipster style blog titles and just couldn't do it.

I am also pretty weird. But we'll get to that later ...
..
...
We already got there didn't we....

The list of things this blog may contain is hella long so you just get to be SURPRISED!
All none of you reading HEH.

Alright peace out. Listen to this it's awesome
